I am Clare Minter, a specialist maternity reflexologist based near Saffron Walden in north Essex, with over 20 years of experience supporting women through every stage of pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. What is pregnancy reflexology?

Pregnancy and maternity reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that works through careful pressure applied to specific points on the feet. It is deeply relaxing, completely safe when carried out by a specialist, and may help to relieve a wide range of common pregnancy discomforts.

Unlike many treatments, reflexology is suitable from the second trimester through to your due date and beyond - including during labour itself and in the postnatal period. Each session is tailored entirely to you, where you are in your pregnancy, and how you are feeling on the day.

How pregnancy and maternity reflexology may help you

Many of the women I see come to me because they are struggling with the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy.

Pregnancy reflexology treatments may help to relieve:

  • Morning sickness and nausea
  • Back pain, hip pain and pelvic girdle pain (PGP/SPD)
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbance
  • Anxiety and mood swings
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn and acid reflux
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Fluid retention
  • Sciatica

As well as addressing these symptoms, many clients tell me that their sessions simply give them the space to slow down, breathe, and truly connect with their growing baby - something that can be genuinely hard to do when life is busy.

"First-time mums who received 10 reflexology treatments had average labour times of 5 to 6 hours — compared to the textbook average of 24 to 48 hours."

The research behind maternity reflexology

One of the things that sets my approach apart is that my practice is underpinned by published research. I do not just rely on anecdotal evidence - there is a real body of clinical study supporting the use of reflexology during pregnancy and labour.

A 2010 research study found that reflexology treatments during pregnancy significantly reduced pain during labour and reduced the length of the first stage of labour. (1)

Another study found that first time mums who received ten reflexology treatments in the lead-up to birth had average labour times of just five to six hours, compared to the textbook average of 24 to 48 hours. The group treated with reflexology also needed significantly less pain relief during labour. (2)

A further study found that reflexology treatments can help improve the quality of sleep in postnatal women. (3)

"Thank you so much for the amazing treatment on Wednesday evening. You'll be pleased to know that I started having contractions in the early hours of Thursday and went into established labour yesterday morning. All the tips on breathing and positive energy you gave me really helped keep me positive and focused throughout. I truly believe your treatment helped me in so many ways."

Supporting you through every stage

My pregnancy and maternity reflexology sessions are available from your second trimester right through to the postnatal period.

Here is how I can support you at each stage:

During pregnancy

Regular pregnancy reflexology sessions provide nurturing time to truly relax, connect with your baby, and address any discomforts you are experiencing. Whether you are dealing with pelvic girdle pain, struggling to sleep, or simply feeling anxious about what is ahead, your sessions will be tailored entirely to your needs on the day.

I also have specialist experience supporting women with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) - the severe pregnancy sickness that affects up to 1 in 50 women. If you are one of the unlucky sufferers, the calming effects of reflexology may be particularly beneficial, and specific techniques can be used to help you manage this condition.

"Clare has been a huge support in my third trimester of pregnancy. She's extremely knowledgeable and thorough with her questions, whilst also creating a space which feels so relaxing and nurturing. I have loved my treatments and always leave feeling more relaxed and prepared for labour."

Rebecca M.

Preparing for labour

In the weeks leading up to your due date, maternity reflexology can play a real role in helping you feel calm, confident and ready. Research suggests that regular sessions in the final weeks of pregnancy may contribute to a shorter, more positive labour experience - and I will also teach you simple hand reflexology techniques to use yourself during labour, to help you stay calm and manage discomfort.

I work in a complementary way alongside your midwife team. You will need to let them know you are having reflexology treatments before your first appointment - I am happy to advise you on how to have that conversation.

"Thank you for helping me to relax and helping to relieve my pelvic pain and other pregnancy-related ailments! I really believe that the sessions contributed to me having such a fast and relaxed labour."

Marie D., Newport

Postnatal reflexology

The weeks after birth bring enormous physical and emotional changes. A sudden drop in hormone levels, sleepless nights and the demands of a newborn can leave you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed - and it can take a while for your body to find its balance again.

Postnatal reflexology sessions are a gentle, restorative way to support your recovery. They may help to relieve common postnatal discomforts such as breastfeeding issues and constipation, boost low mood, improve sleep quality, and promote your body's own natural healing processes.

Treatments with Clare have helped during and after both of my pregnancies. Her treatment room is the ideal place to unwind during a maternity reflexology session, and she is very professional and knowledgeable. Highly recommend"

Reflexology after your due date

Only around 4% of women will give birth on their due date and many more won't deliver their babies until a few days later. Your midwife may have mentioned induction, but perhaps you'd like to try a natural treatment to help you relax and relieve any anxiety, as you get close to term.

Reflexology is a deeply calming treatment that helps to release muscle tension, which in the later stages of pregnancy may help you to ‘let go’ - sometimes with the desired effect! Acupressure techniques can also be used that may encourage the birthing process to start, but please remember that babies only arrive when they are ready!

Feedback from clients has shown that they've felt calmer, more confident and better prepared for labour after just one post-term reflexology session.

"I was 41 weeks pregnant and feeling fed up and negative about the possibility of a VBAC labour after having a previous C-section when I went to see Clare. She totally relaxed me and turned any negativity into positive thoughts. The treatment and advice was amazing and I left feeling the most relaxed I had felt in a long time. I'm pleased to say I got the birthing experience I always wanted and gave birth naturally to a healthy baby boy. I truly believe my treatment with Clare really helped."

Reflexology and labour

I’ve worked on a voluntary basis within a hospital birthing unit, offering reflexology to women during labour. I was delighted to see how the techniques I used seemed to have such a positive effect and helped to:

  • Calm body and mind
  • Regulate and relieve the intensity of contractions
  • Provide natural pain relief

If you are in the later stages of pregnancy, I’ll provide some simple hand reflexology techniques for you to use during labour.

These should help you to stay calm and focused and may alleviate pain - to enhance your entire birthing experience.

What to expect from your first session

If you have never had reflexology before, it is completely natural to wonder what to expect. Your first session with me will begin with a relaxed conversation about your pregnancy, your health history, and how you have been feeling. This helps me to tailor the treatment entirely to you.

You will then lie comfortably while I work gently on your feet using specialised reflexology techniques. Most clients find the treatment deeply relaxing - many fall asleep! Sessions last approximately 60 minutes for a follow-up treatment, or 90 minutes for your first appointment which includes the initial consultation.

I work from a tranquil, private therapy room near Saffron Walden in north Essex, with free off-road parking available. The room is warm, calm and designed to help you feel completely at ease from the moment you arrive.

What my clients say

If you’d like support during pregnancy and want to prepare for an easier labour, I’d love to help!

Frequently asked questions about pregnancy reflexology

Can you have reflexology when you are pregnant?

Yes — pregnancy reflexology is safe when carried out by a qualified specialist with experience in maternity reflexology. I am a specialist maternity reflexologist with over 20 years experience, and I tailor every treatment to where you are in your pregnancy. I would generally recommend starting from your second trimester.

How many weeks pregnant do you need to be to have reflexology?

I recommend waiting until you are past your first trimester before starting pregnancy reflexology, so from around 12 to 14 weeks onwards. If you have any concerns or a complex pregnancy, I would always encourage you to have a conversation with your midwife first — and I am happy to help you with what to say.

When should you not do reflexology in pregnancy?

There are some situations where reflexology may not be appropriate during pregnancy, including certain high-risk conditions. I always carry out a thorough consultation before your first treatment and will discuss anything relevant to your individual circumstances. If in any doubt, your midwife or GP is always the best first point of contact.

Does the NHS recognise reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy rather than a conventional medical treatment. While it is not routinely offered on the NHS, it is widely recognised as a safe and beneficial complementary approach when carried out by a qualified practitioner. I work alongside, never instead of, your NHS midwife team.

How much does pregnancy reflexology cost?

Your first consultation and treatment session is from £80 and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Follow-up sessions are from £58 for 60 minutes. I am based near Saffron Walden in Essex and am easily reached from Cambridge, Bishop Stortford, Stansted, Great Dunmow and Haverhill.

Can reflexology help with pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy?

Many of my clients come to me specifically because of pelvic girdle pain (PGP), also known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD). While reflexology cannot cure PGP, many women find that treatments provide meaningful relief from discomfort and help them to manage day-to-day more comfortably.

"I was feeling really tired and uncomfortable with Pelvic Girdle Pain that was stopping me from sleeping. After just one treatment, I was more or less cured!"
